Month of the Holy Souls

November is the month which is devoted to the Holy Souls. Our Sacred Space reminds us to pray for all those who have passed away. There is a Rememberance tree standing in the Sacred Space, where the school community can place a leaf with the name/s of family members or friends who have died. The Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Classes attended a prayer service in the school hall, officiated by Fr. Paul Crosbie on Friday 16th November 2012. It was a reflective time where the classes and their teachers could remember loved ones who are gone.

Misson Month

October is the month when we remember all those wonderful people who do mission work in poorer countries. Our Sacred Space is filled with information about the misson workers who give their time generously to people who have very little in life. We had a visit from Sr Nuala who spent many years working in India. She told the children about the poverty she came across and how she and the many other mission workers tried to educate the people in India, so that their lives will improve. She certainly gave us alot to think about and we feel very thankful for everythimg we have.

St Paul's Church Silver Jubilee

This year marks the twenty fifth anniversary of the opening of St. Paul's Church. There have been many special events in the Church calendar this year to celebrate the anniversary. One such event was held on Saturday 24th March when the children from our Sixth Classes were confirmed by Bishop Smith. The final celebration was held last Sunday 24th June, when Bishop Smith celebrated 12 noon Mass and the homily was given by Fr. Thomas O'Connor, St. Patrick's College, Maynooth.

On Sunday 10th June, an outdoor Mass was held in Mullingar to mark the beginning of the International Eucharistic Congress 2012 and the Feast of Corpus Christi. After the Mass  celebrated by Fr Padraig Mc Mahon with Bishop Smith presiding, a procession of the Blessed Sacrament made it's way through the town to the steps of the Cathedral, where Bishop Smith gave Benediction. Children from the local primary schools were asked to make flags. The children in our First and Second Classes had great fun doing this. They made plenty of yellow and white 'Papal' flags and also a few green, white and orange ones to wave during the Mass. Many of the children from our Second Classes attended the Mass in their Communion clothes and afterwards joined in the Corpus Christi procession.

Preparing for the International Eucharistic Congress

The 50th International Eucharistic Congress is to be held in Dublin this year. There will be a week of events from 10th-17th June. The children from Ms. O'Dowd's Second Class and Mrs. Granahan's Fifth Class created beautiful artwork for the occasion. The pastoral team brought the artwork from class to class to show all the children who admired the excellent work. Well done to all the children and teachers involved. The two pieces of art will be on display in the Cathedral in the coming weeks.

Easter Sunday

Our Sacred Space was transformed into an Easter Garden. The colour purple was used to symbolize the pain and suffering leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus. The black crosses were there to signify Good Friday when Jesus died on the cross for us. There was an empty tomb to remind us that Jesus rose from the dead.

St. Patrick's Day

Our Patron Saint's feast day is always a reason to celebrate. The pastoral Team decorated the Sacred Space in traditional green, white and gold. They also wrote about the life of St. Patrick to remind us of his life's work.

Catholic School's Week

January 29th - February 4th

The theme for Catholic School's Week 2012 is 'Christ's Living Body active in our world'. The theme was taken from the anthem of the 50th International Eucharistic Congress which is to be held in Dublin in June.

Members of the Pastoral Team said morning and evening prayers and the Angelus over the intercom daily and  encouraged everyone to join in. The Sacred Space had information about St Brigid and St Blaise, whose feast days fall on February 1st and 3rd respectively. Many classes made St. Brigid's Crosses.

Happy New Year

It's a New Year, a time for new beginnings and a time to start afresh. The Pastoral Team thought this would be a good time to get the school thinking. They brought us the 'Thought for the day', 'Did you know?' and 'Question of the week'. The Pastoral Team spoke to the school over the intercom at various times throughout the month posing questions, passing on information and giving everyone plenty to think about.

Preparing For Christmas

An Advent wreath was placed in the Sacred Space to remind everyone of the Season of Advent. The wreath had three purple candles, one pink candle and one white candle. Advent began on Sunday 27th November and tradionally a candle is lit each week until Christmas Eve when the final white candle is lit to celebrate the birth of Jesus. There was also a Jessie Tree placed in the Sacred Space. Lots of homemade ornaments, made by children in the school, were hung on the Jessie Tree. At this time of the year, children count how many sleeps there are until Santa visits but this year Our Sacred Space truly reminded us of the real meaning of Christmas.

Month of Remembrance

A school Tree of Remembrance stands in the Sacred Space this month to remind us of all those loved ones who have passed away. Parents, guardians, staff and students were invited to write the name of a loved one on a leaf and hang it from the tree. A special box was also in the Sacred Space to hold the names of all our loved ones who have passed away and they will be remembered in a Mass for the Holy Souls at the end of the month.

Eucharistic Congress Bell

On the 14th of October, children from our Second and Sixth Classes were invited to St. Paul's Church to see the Eucharistic Congress Bell. The bell was only in Mullingar for one day so the children felt very lucky to see it. They took turns carrying it from St. Paul's Church to Presentation School where they passed it on to another group of children to carry it on to the Cathedral.

The bell is a key symbol of the 50th International Eucharistic Congress which will be held in Dublin in June 2012. This is the second time that Ireland will host the Eucharistic Congress. It was also held here in 1932.
