National Biodiversity Week

24th May 2025

We were very fortunate in 5th class this week to be joined by Nuala from the Irish Peatland Conservation Council in conjunction with Midlands Science for a fascinating workshop to celebrate National Biodiversity Week. Nuala explained that biodiversity is the extraordinary variety of life on Earth and our workshop focused on the rich biodiversity that thrives within our local community. We explored the history of our canal here in Mullingar, the Royal Canal, as well as the wide variety of flora and fauna that live in and along the canal. We examined a sample of canal water to identify invertebrates that are found in our local waterways. These invertebrates are important indicators of water quality and play a vital role in the canal ecosystem. Thank you so much to Nuala and Midlands Science for such an engaging and informative workshop.
